Many of our elders take this medicine regularly. With simple measures you can make them tolerate it better.

The main indication of Sintrom, which contains the active ingredient acenocoumarol, is to prevent the formation of thrombi in prone people and, in this way, prevents heart and brain infarcts.

What is Sintrom used for?

Sintrom is therefore an anticoagulant. It is a delicate drug, it has side effects, but it is still safer than some of the newer anticogulants that are prescribed and that, instead of preventing blood clots, they actually increase them.

The body’s coagulation and anticoagulation system is precise: on the one hand, it produces clots, thrombi, to seal bumps or wounds and, on the other hand, it exerts an anticoagulant action so that the blood flows properly to the last corner of the body and prevents it from thrombi are made when they are not needed.

Can its effect be achieved in other ways?

One of your best-known regulators of blood clotting is exercise. It has been proven that, after an operation, it is convenient to lift patients as soon as possible, instead of leaving them bedridden, since excess rest increases the chances of thrombi forming.

Today, however, instead of recommending the patient to move, they are put on state- of-the-art heparins. Now bedridden patients do not die of thrombi but of hemorrhages, due to its secondary effect.

Does it cause interactions with food or medicinal plants?

Another important regulator of coagulation, with a softer action than Sintrom, is sweet clover, which is usually taken as an infusion or tincture.

It belongs to the Fabaceae family, like alfalfa, but has the opposite effect to this, because alfalfa is very rich in vitamin K, which can completely inhibit the action of Sintrom.

St. John’s wort or St. John’s wort, which in natural medicine is used to improve mood, among other indications, is also contraindicated .

Currently it is not recommended to stop consuming other vegetables, apart from alfalfa, even if they are rich in vitamin K, because they help regulate the action of Sintrom. That is, the vegetables prevent the side effects of the drug.

Is it prescribed for sick people?

Some doctors preventively prescribe anticoagulants to people who are healthy but have genetic factors that can affect clotting. Tackling prevention with medication alone can lead to a cascade of problems where none existed.

To prevent thrombi, address risk factors, exercise and eat a proper diet, and not smoke. It is also advisable to avoid estrogen treatment for menopause (another questioned drug treatment) and oral contraceptives.
