Are Progressive Glasses Suitable For The Computer?

We spend many hours in front of computers and screens. Not wearing the right lenses can cause muscle aches or accentuate vision problems.

One of the problems that multifocal or progressive glasses present is that they are specially designed to have a distant vision area at the top of the glass and a near vision area (approximately 40 cm) in the lower area.

This progressive dual vision allows you to use only one pair of glasses to perform any type of task. However, that determines that, when they are used to work with the computer, they are looking into the distant gaze zone.

At that time, if our ability to focus is limited by age, our tendency is to lift our chin slightly without realizing it, in order to use the near or intermediate vision zone to see the screen. The most immediate consequence is a cervical problem induced by poor posture, which over time can cause discomfort such as muscle aches or contractures.

In front of the computer, the single vision glasses are better

To solve this problem, the most advisable and effective thing is to use single vision glasses to work with the computer. Monofocal glasses have the entire field of vision to see at the same distance, so it is better to have a graduation according to the distances to be used.

  • About 50-60 cm to work in front of the screen.
  • About 40-50 cm, a little less, to type on the keyboard.

To that end, you can measure the usual working distance and ask the optician to graduate the glasses according to these parameters.

Another possibility are the so-called occupational progressive glasses that have a very wide near vision zone and a small upper zone for intermediate distances.

How to get in front of a computer without hurting yourself

It is important that you place the screen and keyboard in ergonomic positions, not only to benefit your eye health but also to avoid bad posture. That will also minimize efforts.

As you may have deduced, the use of the laptop is not very interesting other than occasionally.

In the workplace to use, you must take into account to use:

  • Normal screen as large as possible; It should be so that the upper part is, more or less, a little higher than the height of our eyes. This will avoid having to move your neck to read.
  • With as high a flicker frequency as possible (the higher the frequency, the less the monitor flicker is noticeable).
  • Properly regulate the brightness and contrast of the monitor to improve the legibility of the text.
  • Use anti-glare monitors or with a system that prevents reflections.

All this so that your eyes get tired less, especially if you have to spend many hours in front of the computer.
