Oil Pulling: The Benefits Of A Different Mouthwash

Oil Pulling or mouthwash with oil, usually coconut oil, is an ancient form of Ayurveda healing that is now making a strong comeback.

The origin of the practice of Oil Pulling, or mouthwash with oils, dates back more than 3,000 years and belongs to the Ayurveda tradition of India.

Sesame oil was traditionally used, but coconut oil is preferable for its antibacterial properties and more pleasant taste. Coconut oil should be organic.

The oil exerts a stimulating massage on the gums and carries away dirt that traditional paste does not remove. In addition, coconut oil is antiviral and antibacterial : it inhibits the growth of Streptococcus mutans , an acid-producing bacterium that causes tooth decay.

It is also useful against bad breath and is a natural teeth whitening agent.

How to practice Oil Pulling

The best time for Oil Pulling is in the morning on an empty stomach.

Take a tablespoon of coconut oil and keep it in your mouth. If it is solid, it will very soon liquefy due to body temperature.

Swirl the oil throughout your mouth for 10 to 30 minutes. Pass it conscientiously between the teeth. If you find it unpleasant to keep coconut oil in your mouth that long, you can start with 5 minutes and increase the time each day.

At the end of the oil rinse, it is important not to swallow it. Spit it out in the organic waste or oil to get to the green dot.

Then rinse your mouth with baking soda water.

Homemade toothpaste

It is very easy to prepare this toothpaste at home, it only contains three ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 30g coconut oil
  • 45 g of baking soda
  • 5 g birch sugar

Preparation

Mix the oil in a liquid state with the other two ingredients until you get a paste. Birch sugar (xylitol) prevents cavities.
